Plein-air is a French term designating a work of art painted in the "open air." Over 500 hundred people watched and witnessed numerous local artist work at their easels May 14th during the Second Sunday on Main plein-air competition.

The artwork was judged on site and the first place winner was Nancy Nordloh Neville. Judge Arthur Spiegel, United States Circuit Court Judge for the Southern District of Ohio, was second place winner and Jan Boone was the third place winner.

Nancys' studio is at the Pendleton Art Center, where you can see and purchase her work each month on Final Friday. Jan Boone was a regular last year and will return to Main Street each second Sunday during 2006.

Judge Spiegel is a talented artist and the Second Sunday on Main organizers hope he leaves his chamber to return to his easel frequently..

The winners won cash prizes and wonderful gifts and gift certificates from Enjoy the Arts, Classical Glass, Ensemble Theatre, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Hotel,Coffee Emporium, Kaldi's and St. Teresa's Textile Trove.

"The very activity of having the artists on the sidewalks along Main Street gave the area a lovely bohemian flair," said Melody Richardson, chair of Second Sunday on Main. But the metaphysicians who gathered on Main Street on May 14th did the real magic. All afternoon they `punched holes in the storm cloud' giving Main Street festival-goers a pleasant afternoon to engage in psychic readings and energy work.

"Together we were determined that the first Second Sunday on Main would be a warm and wonderful gathering for all," said Psychic Pat Garry. "We will be back for each Second Sunday on Main through October. We are especially looking forward to Dog Days on Main, June 11, when our animal communicators will be on hand to tell people just what is on their dog's mind": patriciagarry.com

One of Cincinnati's favorite Frenchmen, Jean-Robert de Cavel talked with foodies for over an hour. He shared secrets, recipes and tastes of some of his recommendations for summer cooking and dining. Over 50 people packed into Mr. Pitiful's for this free culinary exchange: bistrojeanro.com

Then sommelier Paul Ortiz took center stage for a causal yet informative wine tasting: cincinnatiwineschool.com

Did we whet your appetite? Come join June's Second Sunday on Main, Dog Days on Main., June 11, noon - 5p.m. Musical entertainment will be Jake Speed and the Freddies, performing a free concert all afternoon. Clinton Jones from downtown's Palace Restaurant is the celebrity chef at 2 o'clock at Mr. Pitiful's, followed by Paul Ortiz's tasting of great summer wines suitable for the front porch and picnics? while hanging out with your dog. Bring your dog: Free dog treats for all the canines. That will surely put a smile on their faces, a good thing because the first 50 dogs will get a free photograph from pet photographer Kristen Kolaczkowski.

Make a mental note: The only place to be on the second Sunday of the Month is on Main Street in historic Over-the-Rhine. Mais oui!
