Architecture in Cincinnati Book Premiere
Publication Party, Cincinnati Art Museum, November 8, 5-7 p.m., no charge
by Sue Ann Painters

Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati presents Architecture in Cincinnati: An Illustrated History of Designing and Building an American City by Sue Ann Painter, Photographs by Alice Weston.

Produced by the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati and published by Ohio University Press, Architecture in Cincinnati is the first chronological history of the area to focus on architecture and the built environment.

Noted environmental artist Alice Weston, luminous color photographs capture the beauty of the Queen City and the spirit of individual buildings, bridges, and urban places. The photographs are supplemented with fascinating historical images from the Cincinnati Historical Society Library/Cincinnati Museum Center. The authors are Sue Ann Painter (managing editor and author of chapters 1-6, 1788-1933), Beth Sullebarger (chapters 7,8,10, (1933-1963 and 1989-2006), and Jayne Merkel (chapter 9, 1964-1988). DAAP professor John Hancock was editorial advisor.

The photographer and several of the authors will be available for book signings at the Cincinnati Art Museum (Nov. 8, 5-7 p.m.), Contemporary Arts Center (Nov. 16, 5-6 p.m. invitation only), and Cincinnati Museum Center (Nov. 25, 2-4 p.m.). Information: www.architecturecincy.org

Architecture in Cincinnati traces the city's development from the first town plans of the 1780s to the city that it is today, renowned for its dramatic architectural achievements. It is a fascinating story of patrons, politicians, architects, engineers, and planners building a city.

It is the hope of the foundation that this informative, beautifully illustrated book will inspire renewed pride of place in residents of the city. Nonresidents and students of architectural and urban history will enjoy this authoritative introduction to a remarkable "yet typical" American city.
